When people think of Sumter, SC, they often picture the iconic Swan Lake. But for Reygane and Michael’s engagement session, we decided to trade the feathers for some urban flair. We headed straight to Law Range in the heart of downtown, and the results were nothing short of sophisticated.
Law Range is one of those spots that feels like a hidden slice of a bigger city. With its historic brickwork, clean architectural lines, and that perfectly timeless alleyway vibe, it provided the ideal "editorial" backdrop for a couple that cleans up this well.
The Session: Downtown Sophistication
There is a specific energy to a downtown shoot. It’s less about "frolicking in a field" and more about movement, style, and structure.
The Backdrop: The weathered textures of the Law Range buildings gave us a neutral, gritty, yet high-end palette to work with.
The Vibe: Reygane and Michael brought a level of effortless cool to the session. From walking hand-in-hand past the historic facades to those quiet, leaned-in moments against the brick, they made downtown Sumter look like a movie set.
The Lighting: We caught that "in-between" light where the sun bounces off the surrounding buildings, creating a soft, natural reflector effect that is incredibly flattering for portraits.
Technical Spotlight: Capturing the "City" Feel
To give Reygane and Michael a gallery that felt different from a standard park session, I leaned into a few specific photography techniques:
Leading Lines: Law Range is full of them! I used the perspective of the buildings and the sidewalk to draw the eye directly to the couple, creating a sense of scale and depth.
Compression: By using a longer focal length (like an 85mm lens), I was able to "pull" the background closer to them, making the urban textures feel intimate rather than distracting.
Candid Movement: Downtown sessions thrive on motion. I had them walk, turn, and laugh together to capture those "paparazzi-style" shots that feel chic and unposed.
From Engagement to "I Do"
The best part of this session? It’s only the beginning. I am beyond thrilled to share that I’ll also be capturing Reygane and Michael’s wedding day! Engagement sessions are the perfect "warm-up" for the big day. It gave us a chance to get comfortable behind the camera, find their best angles, and build that trust that makes wedding morning photos feel like a breeze.
